French secret agent Josselin Beaumont is sent to kill Colonel Njala, the dictator of Malagawi, a fictional African country. However, before he manages to accomplish his mission, the political situation changes radically and the French secret services are forced to hand Beaumont over to the Malagasy authorities. After a long and unfair trial, during which Beaumont was injected with drugs, he was sentenced to a long term of penal servitude in a "re-education camp".

After a daring escape with an African detainee, he returns to France and informs the French secret services of his presence, promising to kill Njala, on an official visit to France, and thus take revenge on those who betrayed him. The secret services react by putting other agents on Beaumont's trail. However, the latter manages to stay one step ahead, by humiliating and killing some of his main traitors, including Rosen, the sadistic head of the secret police. After Rosen falls in a shootout, Beaumont takes Rosen's ID card and plasters his dogtags on his body, sowing confusion within the Secret Service and temporarily reducing Njala's custody. Beaumont ends up tricking a Secret Service agent into shooting the dictator. While the government officials consulted with higher authorities, he slowly moved towards Njala's helicopter, but was shot down by the government agents, who had been ordered to do so.
