Description of this Poster La Piscine Delon

La Piscine is a 1969 psychological film directed by Jacques Deray, starring Alain Delon, Romy Schneider, Maurice Ronet and Jane Birkin.

The film takes place in summer on the French Riviera and deals with sexual jealousy and possessiveness. The film was shot in French and English, with the actors filmed in English for the international release, which was unusual at a time when films were always dubbed or subtitled. The international version, lasting 114 minutes, is shorter than the French version and is edited slightly differently.

Jean-Paul, writer, and Marianne, his partner of a little over two years, spend vacation in a friend's villa near Saint-Tropez. There is a tension in their relationship that excites Marianne: the film begins with a scene where they are together at the edge of the villa's swimming pool and where she encourages him to scratch her back. He complies, but throws her into the pool and jumps after her. In a later scene, he takes a branch and uses it to whip her bare buttocks, playfully but with a force that increases as the scene progresses.

Harry, an old friend and record producer who was Marianne's lover before Jean-Paul, arrives to visit and surprises the couple by bringing his 18-year-old daughter, Pénélope, whose existence they never knew existed. Marianne, without asking Jean-Paul's opinion, invites Harry and Penelope to stay.

The four stay together and Harry draws Marianne towards him as the days go by. Mocking Jean-Paul who abandoned serious writing to work in advertising, Harry drinks heavily and throws a surprise party while Jean-Paul, who has recovered from alcohol, remains sober. Meanwhile, it becomes clear that Penelope neither loves nor respects her father, whom she barely knew during her childhood. She and Jean-Paul become closer and spend a day alone by the sea.

That evening, while the women are asleep, Harry, drunk, confronts Jean-Paul and accuses him of having seduced Penelope to take revenge for his own weaknesses on his more successful friend. While trying to punch Jean-Paul, Harry falls into the pool and is too drunk to swim. Jean-Paul, who has also been drinking, first prevents him from getting out of the water, then deliberately pushes Harry underwater and holds him until he drowns. He covers up the crime by undressing Harry and placing new pants and a shirt by the pool to make it appear as an accident.

After the funeral, a police officer, Inspector Lévêque, visited the house several times. He confides to Marianne the reasons why he doubts the accident theory: Harry was wearing his watch, expensive and not waterproof, and there are no traces of sweat on the clothes he was supposed to wear. When she talks to Jean-Paul about it, he confesses everything to her, and she goes to see Harry's clothes, hidden in the cellar, which would have betrayed him. But when she does not bring this evidence to the police, the inspector reluctantly suspends the investigation.

Marianne accompanies Pénélope to the airport and takes her home to her mother. When Penelope asks for the truth about her father's death, Marianne assures her that it was indeed an accident. She and Jean-Paul are preparing to leave the villa when she tells him that they will not leave together. She calls a taxi but he puts his hand on the phone, cutting her call and silencing her. Ultimately, neither leaves that day, and in the film's final shot, they stand side by side, looking out the window at the pool, then kiss.
