Description of this Les Grandes Gueules Poster
Les Grandes Gueules is a 1965 French drama film directed by Robert Enrico, based on a novel by José Giovanni. Starring two popular male leads, Bourvil and Lino Ventura, the film tells the story of a man who fights to put the old family sawmill back into service, despite violent opposition from his competitors and the betrayal of his right-hand man. .
This film was the eighth most popular film at the French box office in 1965.
When his father died, Hector returned to the Vosges after 20 years in Canada to take over the family sawmill. Remote and dilapidated, it cannot compete with modern companies and no one wants to work there. At an auction, he meets two former prisoners, Laurent and Mick, looking for work. Laurent persuades Hector to recruit a group of parolees from the local prison.
At first, the arrangement works well. With a poorly paid workforce who cannot leave, he manages to put the sawmill back into production. This angers Therraz, owner of a lumber company further down the valley, who does not want a lower-cost competitor, and battles ensue between rival groups of loggers.
A parolee, called Reichmann, has been detained and eventually Hector is informed that he will arrive by bus the day after the village festival. The workers enjoy the party until a group of Therraz's men interrupt it during an epic battle. When the police arrive, Mick is found dead. The next morning, when Hector goes to look for Reichmann, he is not there.
Returning to the sawmill, he finds the police taking all the parolees back to prison and learns that Laurent hired them to put Reichmann in a secluded place where he could kill him. Despaired by this betrayal and the failure of his dream, Hector decides to burn the sawmill and die in the flames. Laurent, who was leaving for Italy, repents and rushes to the sawmill, just in time to save him.
