Description of this Le Schpountz Poster

"Le Schpountz" is a French film directed by Marcel Pagnol in 1938, adapted from a play of the same name. The film tells the story of François, a naive and dreamy young man who dreams of becoming a movie star.

Irénée lives and works in the small grocery store of his childless uncle, who raised him, and dreams of becoming a famous and wealthy movie actor with an exotic car. One day, a film crew stops in the village and he tries to interest them in his little-known talents. They play with his obsession, calling him the village idiot or schpountz, and even giving him a fake contract. His uncle makes fun of his naivety and the friendly Françoise, a member of the team, warns him not to take him seriously. But Irénée withdraws his savings and, taking the train to Paris, arrives at the studio, from where he is constantly kicked out. Françoise, taken with pity, finds him a job as a props designer.

But the jokers who first trapped him use him again to ruin the capture of a pompous actor, Galubert, under the direction of an even more pompous director. Sending him onto the set causes chaos, but some people realize he's more funny than pitiful and they give him a role. The film is a success, the public preferring the comedy of Irénée to the grandeur of Galubert. The director of the studio gives him a real contract, which he will not sign before having obtained a Peugeot 601 Eclipse convertible, and this is how he asks Françoise to marry him. Once married, they both go to his uncle's village, where he enters the shop alone, in the clothes he left in, telling his uncle that his dream of fame has proven false and in him asking to come home. The uncle is delighted to be right and Irénée then summons his wife. The uncle is delighted to have someone else to work in the shop, until Irenaeus tells him to look at the car outside and thus reveals the truth.
