Description of this Death to Trousses Poster

La Mort Aux Trousses is a 1959 American spy film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and written by Ernest Lehman. The plot of the film is inspired by a true story from World War II. The main roles are played by Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason. The film's plot centers on Roger O. Thornhill (Grant), an advertising agency executive innocently pursued by a group of spies who mistake him for a member of a government agency.

After abandoning the idea of a film adaptation of the Mary Deare detective novel, Hitchcock agreed to direct a new film for the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio, whose executives liked the story idea. The director signs the contract, thus obtaining complete independence of action. Upon its release, the film received mostly positive reviews, which noted that after his risky experiments in Vertigo (1958), Hitchcock returned to the time-tested conventions of suspense, humor, and romance. North, Northwest was nominated in three Academy Award categories and was a commercial success, grossing over $13 million in the United States alone. In 1995, it was placed under protection by the National Film Registry.

Roger O. Thornhill (Cary Grant), an advertising agency executive, attends an informal business meeting at the Plaza Hotel in New York. He's worried because he forgot to tell his secretary Maggie (Doreen Lang) that his mother (Jessie Royce Landis) is at a bridge party with one of her friends, which will prevent him from reaching her. He decides to send a telegram. She summons a hotel bouncer to search the room for someone named George Kaplan. Across the room are two men - Valerian (Adam Williams) and Licht (Robert Ellenstein) - who believe Thornhill's call is confirmation that his name is Kaplan. When Thornhill manages to send the telegram, the two men arrest him in the hallway and force him, at gunpoint, to leave the building. They get into a car together and drive to a private residence owned by diplomat Lester Townsend (Philip Ober) in Glen Cove.

There, Thornhill meets, posing as Townsend, Phillip Vandamm (James Mason) and his secretary Leonard (Martin Landau). The man vehemently denies his name is Kaplan and considers the kidnapping a mistake. Vandamm gives no credibility to his words. When Thornhill tries to leave the room, he discovers Valérian at the door. Vandamm informs him that he risks being killed if he does not cooperate. When Thornhill denies all the documents, Vandamm leaves the room. Leonard, Licht and Valérian force him to drink a bottle of bourbon, then drive a drunk Thornhill to his car. Valerian, sitting in the passenger seat, starts the engine and drives the car up the hillside. Despite his drunkenness, Thornhill realizes the situation and pushes the man out of the car. At the last moment, he prevents the car from falling off the cliffs into the sea. The man driving suspiciously is chased by a police patrol. Wanting to avoid a collision with the cyclist, Thornhill brakes suddenly. The police car following him crashes into the back of his vehicle. Thornhill's pursuers, Licht and Valerian, who witnessed the incident, turned around and went to the residence. The man is arrested. At the police station, he testifies that he was kidnapped and that an attempt was made to kill him. It turns out the sports car he was driving was stolen. Exercising his right to a phone call, assisted by Sergeant Klinger (John Beradino), Thornhill, intoxicated, calls his mother, requesting that a lawyer come in to help him out. Doctor Cross (Philip Coolidge), who examines him, diagnoses alcohol poisoning. The man refuses a blood test and falls asleep on the table.

The next day, Thornhill's lawyer told the whole story in court. By decision of the judge, the hearing is adjourned so that the credibility of the testimony can be examined. Accompanied by his mother, his lawyer and two inspectors from the investigative service, the man went to Townsend's home. He shows them the room in which he was held. A woman identifying herself as Mrs. Townsend (Josephine Hutchinson) testifies that Thornhill was present at the party of his own free will. She informs law enforcement that her husband is at UN headquarters where he is scheduled to address the General Assembly that afternoon. An exasperated Thornhill realizes that no one believes him and accompanies his mother to the Plaza Hotel, looking for evidence to corroborate his story. At the reception, he learns that Kaplan has reserved room 796 and asks his mother, giving him $50, to obtain the key to the suite rented by Kaplan. In the bedroom, Thornhill finds a photo in which she recognizes Townsend (Vandamm, who claims to be him). The housekeeper and doorman believe Thornhill to be Kaplan. When the phone rings in the room, the man realizes that he is being followed. In the elevator, he meets Licht and Valerian. He decides to escape. He gets in a taxi and asks to be taken to UN headquarters, where Townsend is to speak. At the reception, he pretends to be Kaplan and insists on meeting him. Meanwhile, Licht and Valerian go to the UN headquarters. The latter gets out of the taxi and walks towards the building. Thornhill is confused when it turns out that Townsend is actually a completely different person. It turns out that the diplomat's wife has been dead for many years. When he pulls out a photograph found in the hotel room and asks for the identity of the man in it, the real Townsend is murdered and falls into his arms. Thornhill removes a knife from the man's back. A nearby photographer takes a picture of him, a crowd of people converges on the scene and panic sets in. Thornhill explains that he has nothing to do with it and, terrified, runs away.

At Defense Intelligence Agency headquarters, a group of agents led by a man nicknamed "The Professor" (Leo G. Carroll) discuss Townsend's murder and Thornhill's involvement in it. The agents debate whether they should intervene to protect Thornhill, but "the Professor" refuses, believing that he is effectively distracting another agent who is working undercover for Vandamm. Learning that Kaplan has gone to Chicago, Thornhill follows his trail. He escapes the police and boards a train. There he meets an attractive blonde who, seeing the agents pursuing him, gives them a false lead. In the evening, Thornhill again encounters a mysterious woman in the dining car who introduces herself as Eve Kendall (Eva Marie Saint). She admits to him that she knows Thornhill's true identity and that she knows why he is being pursued. She suggests that he hide in his compartment when two police officers board the train. Their meeting becomes intimate.

The woman secretly transmits a message to the steward for Vandamm and Leonard, who are also on the same train. In the morning, Thornhill disguises himself as a porter and leaves the station area with Kendall. While shaving in the men's room, the woman receives further instructions from Leonard. She informs Thornhill that Kaplan will meet him outside the police station. The man, following the directions he received, takes a bus outside of Chicago, where he disembarks at an intersection in the middle of an empty farm field. After a few minutes of waiting, Thornhill saw a plane flying over the fields, in full agro-aerial activity. At one point, the device begins attacking the man, forcing him to take cover in a nearby cornfield. The chemical sprayed into the air causes Thornhill to suffocate. He soon sees a tanker truck coming, which he desperately stops in the middle of the road. The plane loses its balance and hits the back of the tanker, causing an explosion. Passersby stop to see the incident up close. Thornhill steals a van from the side of the road and returns to the Ambassador Hotel in Chicago.

At the reception, the man learned that Kaplan had left the room in the morning to move to Rapid City, South Dakota. He realizes that Kendall lied to him. Guessing the truth, he goes to the young woman's room. Without revealing anything, he insists on having dinner together, but the woman refuses at first. She ends up accepting. She picks up the phone and writes down the address. As Thornhill goes to the bathroom, Kendall leaves the room. The man reads the address on the card and follows suit. He finds himself at the auction house, where he observes the woman surrounded by Vandamm and Leonard. Feeling betrayed and bitter, he decides to confront her directly. The "professor" is also present at the auction. After reporting Kendall and Vandamm, Thornhill threatens to go to the police to testify against them. Leonard and Valerian cut him off on his way out. Desperate, he orchestrates a scene by punching one. The two men meet in a cafe on Mount Rushmore. Thornhill (as Kaplan) informs Vandamm that he knows about his party's departure from the country and that the price for his silence is a girlfriend. When Thornhill confronts Kendall, the woman shoots him twice (with blank bullets) and flees. Vandamm and Leonard are convinced of his death. The "Professor" leads the man into the woods to meet Kendall. During the conversation, Thornhill learns that the woman is leaving with Vandamm. Furious, he tries to stop Kendall, but the "Professor" driver knocks him out with a blow to the face. He is then transported under protection to the hospital, from where he secretly escapes. He goes to Vandamm's residence, where he overhears his conversation with Leonard about the secret microfilm hidden in the figurine he bought at auction. Leonard reveals that the gun Kendall used is loaded with blanks. Vandamm, guessing that she is a double agent, informs her secretary that the girl will be murdered on board the plane and that her body will be thrown into the water. Thornhill, who is listening at the doors, attempts to warn Kendall, but the woman leaves the room before he can reach the window. He writes the contents of the warning on a box of matches and places it in the living room, where Kendall, accompanied by Vandamm and Leonard, is waiting for a private plane. After a while, he notices a box with the initials "ROT". Getting her bearings, she goes upstairs where she meets Thornhill, who tells her about blanks and microfilms. He warns her not to get on the plane under any circumstances. As Kendall walks out with Leonard and Vandamm, the housekeeper notices Thornhill walking around upstairs. After the plane lands, they hear gunshots. Taking advantage of a moment of distraction, Kendall grabs Vandamm's sculpture and flees with Thornhill. Leonard and Valérian set out in pursuit. Thornhill realizes that they are at the top of Mount Rushmore. Coming down the mountain, Valérian attacks Thornhill with a knife, but the man throws him off the peak after a brief scuffle. Seeing that Leonard is pushing Kendall down the cliff, he squeezes his hand at the last moment. As the villain attempts to kill the couple hanging from the precipice, he is shot by "Professor's" men who arrested Vandamm. Thornhill and Kendall return by train to New York, already married. employees, after which he is arrested. The officers are ordered to take Thornhill to the airport, where he meets the "professor". The latter informs him that Kaplan is an imaginary agent, a decoy intended to catch Vandamm, who faces serious charges of theft of state secrets. He asks Thornhill to pose as Kaplan for 24 hours, until Vandamm is captured. The man refuses. The "Professor" admits to him that Kendall is their agent and that he could be in danger if he is unmasked. The man agrees to continue the mission. He leaves for Rapid City, where Vandamm has a mansion near Mount Rushmore.
