Description of this True Romance Poster
Cobra is a 1986 American action film directed by George P. Cosmatos and written by Sylvester Stallone, who also plays the title role. Reni Santoni, Brigitte Nielsen and Andrew Robinson are the other actors in the film. The film is loosely based on the novel A Running Duck by Paula Gosling, which was later filmed as Fair Game in 1995. However, Stallone's screenplay was originally conceived from ideas he had had during the pre-production of Beverly Hills Cop, for which he heavily revised the script. He wanted to make Beverly Hills Cop a less comedic and more action-oriented film, which the studio refused because it was far too expensive. When he left the project, Eddie Murphy was hired to play the lead role.
The film received generally negative reviews, with most of them focusing on the overuse of genre tropes and excessive violence. It debuted at number one at the US box office and grossed $49 million in the United States and a total of $160 million worldwide. It is now considered a cult classic.
After negotiations between a lone gunman and law enforcement fail during a hostage situation at a Los Angeles supermarket, the Los Angeles Police Department summons Lt. Marion Cobretti (Stallone), a member of their elite division known as the Zombie Squad. Cobretti, referred to by his code name "Cobra", infiltrates the store, locates and negotiates with the shooter, who threatens him with talk of a vague and unknown organization known as "The New World", a supremacist group of Social Darwinist radicals who despise modern society and believe in killing the weak to leave only the strongest and most intelligent to rule the world. Cobretti then killed the shooter by throwing a knife into his abdomen and then shooting him.
As the hostages and bodies are removed from the store, Cobretti is reprimanded by Inspector Monte (Robinson) for his apparent disregard for police procedures and protocols. Harassed by journalists, Cobretti criticizes them for not having given priority to the safety of potential victims. At the time, little did anyone realize that the supermarket hostage-taking was just one of many recent, seemingly unrelated acts of violence and murder in Los Angeles, for example. the same supremacist group that the supermarket shooter talked about.
Ingrid Knudsen (Nielsen), a model and businesswoman, becomes the New World's priority target after witnessing the murderous madness of its members and its leader, identified only as "The Night Slasher" (Thompson). She is placed under the protection of Cobretti and his partner, Sergeant Tony Gonzales (Santoni), after a failed attack against her. When several other assassination attempts by various people connected to the New World fail, Cobretti theorizes that there is an entire army of killers operating with the same modus operandi rather than a lone serial killer with a few associates, but his suggestion is rejected by his superiors. However, the Los Angeles Police Department agreed with Cobretti that it would be safer for him and Knudsen to leave the city.
Shortly after venturing into the countryside, Cobretti forms a romantic relationship with Ingrid, but Nancy Stalk (Garlington), the New World's second and right-hand woman, infiltrates the police team escorting Cobretti's group and compromises their location. Despite Cobretti's suspicions and distrust of Nancy, he does nothing and the party spends the night at a motel. At dawn, the organization moves into the small town and besieges it. Barely having time to react, the attackers storm the motel, injuring Gonzales in the process. Cobretti and Ingrid flee in a van, after killing several members of the organization and seeing others invade the city. With the van badly damaged in the pursuit, the duo crosses a grapefruit plantation to escape to a nearby factory.
Cobretti has defeated most of the New World members by this time, and the few remaining members follow them into the building. Cobretti eliminates all the members and the Night Slasher accidentally shoots Nancy, leaving only himself. Cobretti and the Night Slasher engage in a vicious melee inside the steel mill, which ends with the latter being impaled in the back by a large walking hook, which transports him to a furnace that burns him alive .
In the aftermath, the Los Angeles Police Department arrives and begins cleaning up the city, providing medical aid to Gonzales. Inspector Monte appears to apologize, but he confronts Cobretti again about his lack of respect for police protocols, offering to discuss the matter over a long dinner. Cobretti hits Monte instead, before leaving with Ingrid on one of the motorcycles left by the New World.
