Description of this Breathless Poster
Breathless is a 1960 French crime film written and directed by Jean-Luc Godard. It stars Jean-Paul Belmondo as a wandering criminal named Michel, and Jean Seberg as his American girlfriend Patricia. The film is Godard's first feature film and represents Belmondo's breakthrough as an actor.
À bout de souffle is an influential example of the French New Wave, along with François Truffaut's Les 400 coups and Alain Resnais' Hiroshima mon amour, both released a year earlier, it brought worldwide attention to the new French cinema styles. At the time, Breathless gained attention for its bold visual style, which included the unconventional use of camera jumps.
During its initial release in France, the film attracted more than two million spectators. It has since been considered one of the best films ever made and has repeatedly appeared in Sight & Sound magazine's decadal surveys of filmmakers and critics on the subject. In May 2010, a fully restored version of the film was released in the United States to coincide with the film's 50th anniversary.
Michel is a young and dangerous criminal who is inspired by the cinematic character of Humphrey Bogart. After stealing a car in Marseille, Michel kills a police officer who followed him on a country road. Penniless and fleeing the police, he turns to an American lover, Patricia, a student and aspiring journalist, who sells the New York Herald Tribune on the boulevards of Paris. The ambivalent Patricia unwittingly hides him in her apartment while he simultaneously attempts to seduce her and obtain a loan to finance their escape to Italy. Patricia says she is pregnant, probably with Michel's child. Questioned by the police, she learns that Michel is on the run. She ends up betraying him, but before the police arrive, she confesses to Michel what she has done. He is somewhat resigned to life in prison and does not attempt to escape at first. The police shoot him in the street and, after running down the block, he dies "out of breath."
