Description of this Alfa Romeo Metal Plate

Alfa Romeo Automobiles SpA (Italian: [ˈalfa roˈmɛːo]) is an Italian premium automobile manufacturer and a subsidiary of Stellantis. The company was founded on June 24, 1910, in Milan, Italy. “Alfa” is an acronym of its founding name, “Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili”. “Anonima” means “anonymous,” which was a legal form of company at the time, as it was founded by anonymous investors. In the initial set-up phase, in order to have a building to produce cars, the company purchased the building of the Portello de Darracq factory in Milan, which was in the process of closing and selling all its assets. The brand is known for its sports-oriented vehicles and has participated in automobile races since 1911. Alfa Romeo was owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the company that was responsible for the production of Alfa Romeo cars until its operations were entirely merged with those of Groupe PSA to form Stellantis on January 16, 2021.

The first car produced by the company was the 24 HP of 1910, designed by Giuseppe Merosi. ALFA moved into motor racing, with drivers Franchini and Ronzoni participating in the 1911 Targa Florio with two 24 HP models. In August 1915, the company came under the management of Neapolitan entrepreneur Nicola Romeo, who converted the factory to produce military equipment for the Italian and Allied war efforts. In 1920, the company took the name Alfa Romeo and the Torpedo 20-30 HP was the first car to bear this name.

In 1921, the Banca Italiana di Sconto, which supported Ing. Nicola Romeo & Co, goes bankrupt and the government must support the industrial companies concerned, including Alfa Romeo, through the "Consorzio per Sovvenzioni sui Valori Industriali". In 1925, the railway activities were separated from the Romeo company, and in 1928, Nicola Romeo left it. In 1933, state ownership was reorganized under the banner of the Italian state industrial organization Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale (IRI), which then exercised effective control. The company struggled to return to profitability after World War II and shifted its focus to mass production of small vehicles rather than handcrafting luxury models. In 1954, it developed the Alfa Romeo Twin Cam engine, which remained in production until 1994. The Istituto per la Ricostruzione (IRI), the state conglomerate that controls Finmeccanica, sold the brand to the Fiat group in 1986, because it was not profitable.

Alfa Romeo has successfully participated in automobile Grand Prix, Formula 1, sports car racing, touring car racing and rallies. It competed as both a manufacturer and engine supplier, through works cars (usually under the name Alfa Corse or Autodelta) and privateer cars. The first racing car was manufactured in 1913, three years after the company's founding, and Alfa Romeo won the first Grand Prix car world championship in 1925. Racing victories gave the brand a sporting image , and Enzo Ferrari founded the Scuderia Ferrari racing team in 1929 as the Alfa Romeo racing team, before becoming independent in 1939. It achieved the most victories of any brand in the world.
